The multiplex typewriter was so-named because the type shuttle could hold two completely different type-fonts at the same time. This means that if a typist, for example, wanted to type first in one font or language, switch to the second font or language, and then switch back quickly in the middle of a document, this could easily be achieved by rotating the shuttle. This particular typewriter is an earlier model; as you can see, the keys are exposed. The later multiplex models were enclosed by metal shells. The middle picture to the left is from the Journal of the US Cavalry Association, published in Kansas on September 1, 1913 as part of a full page ad for the Hammond Multiplex.
